MAY 26, 2009 - In the latest accident involving a Yamaha Rhino, a 31-year-old Garden Grove man was killed and four passengers were injured, one critically, when the four-wheeled off-road vehicle rolled over on a Moreno Valley hillside about 6:15 p.m., according to the Riverside County Coroner’s office. Juan Carlos Camarillo was driving the Rhino on Gilman Springs Road, about 200 feet east of Alessandro Boulevard, when the vehicle overturned, ejecting him. Camarillo was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, the coroner said.
A passenger was airlifted to a local hospital and listed in critical condition, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said. Four other passengers suffered minor injuries. The cause of the crash is unknown.
The Rhino has been involved in several fatal rollovers, causing the Consumer Products Safety Commission to launch an investigation and leading Yamaha to recall the 450, 660 and 700 models for repairs. The company also voluntarily suspended sales of the vehicles.
In February 2008, two people were killed in Rhino accidents just hours apart at Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational Area in Imperial County.
