Body Found in Ocean off Laguna Beach Monday, Near Where Man Went Missing

JUNE 16, 2009 - Authorities recovered the body of a man in the vicinity of where a 22-year-old from Lake Forest went missing in the surf Sunday night, authorities said. William Barrientos disappeared into the ocean Sunday after jumping from a cliff near Table Rock Drive about 6:15 p.m., according to a sergeant with the Laguna Beach Police Department. The body was found approximately 20 hours later, about one cove away from where Barrientos disappeared. The Orange County coroner’s office was working to positively identify the body. Barrientos was seen struggling in the ocean and heard calling for help after jumping 30 feet from the rocks. Witnesses attempted to rescue him, but he disappeared before they could reach him. Rescuers searched the area until nightfall Sunday and again Monday morning until high tides created dangerous conditions, police said. The rocks near Table Rock are posted as off limits.
