JUNE 18, 2009 - Two people died when their single-engine plane crashed in a rural section of Riverside County, authorities said. The private plane departed from Corona municipal airport about 11 a.m., according to a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. The wreckage was discovered about 6:40 p.m. by a friend of the pilot who was conducting a search in his own aircraft. The plane was registered to Stephen H. Whitson of Perris, and family members at the home of the owner said he was on board, along with a friend. The accident site was about 1 ½ miles north of Lake Street in the rolling hills northeast of Lake Elsinore. The crash site is inaccessible by automobile, authorities said, and representatives from the FAA and Riverside County coroner’s office had not reached the area by nightfall.
