JULY 26, 2009 – A 28-year-old Santa Ana resident was killed when the sports-utility vehicle he was riding in hit a tree and overturned, authorities said. The unidentified victim was sitting in the back seat of the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban without a seatbelt when the accident occurred about 1 a.m. in the 600 block of South Standard Avenue, according to Santa Ana police. The Suburban was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road and overturned, landing on its side in the parking lot of an elementary school, authorities said. The man was ejected from the SUV and died at Western Medical Center about a half hour after the crash, authorities said. The driver fled the scene on foot, police said. A front-seat passenger was pulled from the SUV, but it’s unknown if that occupant was injured. As part of its investigation into the car accident, the Santa Ana Police Department is seeking witnesses.
