A passenger in Reznik’s Toyota Corolla, Olga Tarcher, 91, died in the Aromas crash. Reznik sustained a massive head injury and broke numerous bones. She was bedridden for six months and now remains in a wheelchair and requires around the clock care. Bowman, the driver of the other vehicle, suffered less serious injuries.

Reznik filed suit against Caltrans, the County of Monterey, and Bowman. The intersection is dangerous in part because vehicles turning left from San Juan Road onto northbound 101 must cross two lanes of southbound traffic before merging into the fast lane of a 60 mph freeway. Entering southbound is also dangerous because cars can turn simultaneously from both lanes.

The CHP has confirmed the intersection is one of the most dangerous on Highway 101 in Monterey County. In the past 10 years, there have been 212 accidents San Juan Road and Highway 101. A Caltrans official once said the accident was a “poster child for the kind of accident we’re trying to avoid.”

The cause of the Santa Cruz County accident remains under investigation. According to reports by Mercury News, Savatiel Sanchez Guttierrez, 23, the driver of the BMW, was travelling north on Holohan Road, hear Highway 152, when he crossed over double yellow lines into southbound traffic. His BMW collided with a Toyota Camry driven by a 26-year-old woman.

Guttierrez was taken to Regional Medical Center by air ambulance and the driver of the Camry was transported by ground ambulance to Watsonville Community Hospital. Guttierrez was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and a misdemeanor charge of not having a driver’s license. A CHP officer said that Guttierrez had never been licensed.

If the facts reported of this accident are accurate, the driver of the BMW was driving recklessly and is very likely at fault for the crash. Several others were also injured in the collision. Two passengers in the pickup truck, Jennie Correia and Travis Castrano, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Casanda Garcia, 16, a passenger in the Focus, suffered major injuries, and was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with critical injuries.

The Maclaren USA buggy recall includes 11 different models: Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, Techno XLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller (all models sold in the US since 1999). According to the CPSC website, 15 children have reportedly lost the tips of their fingers from the strollers. Maclaren is providing a free kit to all consumers that consists of hinge covers to protect the strollers. Parents are advised to stop using the strollers until the repair kits have been installed.
