Man Struck and Killed by Train Sunday in Santa Barbara County

JULY 27, 2009 – A 38-year-old man from Goleta died after he was struck by an Amtrak train south of Refugio Beach, authorities said. Murtaza Kassim Ali was struck shortly after 6 p.m., according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department. Ali and his wife had just parked their vehicle off southbound Highway 101 and Ali was crossing the tracks to look for a potential campsite when the train accident occurred, authorities said. The victim died at the scene. Witnesses said the passenger train had sounded its horn as it approached the accident site and applied its brakes, but it was too late. A 27-year-old woman sustained non-life threatening injuries when she was struck by an Amtrak train July 20 near Gaviota State Beach. View Larger Map
