JULY 27, 2009 – A 38-year-old man from Goleta died after he was struck by an Amtrak train south of Refugio Beach, authorities said. Murtaza Kassim Ali was struck shortly after 6 p.m., according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department. Ali and his wife had just parked their vehicle off southbound Highway 101 and Ali was crossing the tracks to look for a potential campsite when the train accident occurred, authorities said. The victim died at the scene. Witnesses said the passenger train had sounded its horn as it approached the accident site and applied its brakes, but it was too late.
